A bit about me…
One of my earliest childhood memories of music is listening to a mix tape my Dad made me to listen to in the car, singing and bopping along to it in the back seat! Next, I remember a mini keyboard my parents bought me and me trying to work out the melodies to songs we were listening to, I remember family members being impressed that I could work out the melodies by ear at an early age.
Later I got a proper sized keyboard and started singing lessons at school and by teaching myself chords on the keyboard, I wrote my first songs. First they were more like little ditties but later in my teenage years, they became my diary of emotions, full blown songs about all the aspects of my life. I found it so cathartic to write about what I was feeling. This was really brought into focus when I was 16 and we lost my Auntie to cancer. I’d never felt these emotions before, they were so big and so dark. I’m so thankful that I was able to express some of these feelings through my songs and I had amazing music teachers around me at school who were wonderful at nurturing and encouraging me to be brave and to write and sing with emotion.
I struggled with music theory and reading music when I was younger and I never thought I would later go on to study music at degree level, but I was writing more than ever and my love of performing was growing. After pursuing performing arts for a while and a short two term stint at Rose Bruford Drama School (!), I realised I needed to pick Acting or Singing, so here I am! I signed up to an amazing course at VocalTech and had the best 4 years there honing my craft and meeting lots of other likeminded musicians including my husband Hector who is also the co-founder of our band Evokateur.
We gigged all over London with Evokateur and further afield (even playing in Malta, France and Germany). We self released several EPs and felt like a buzz was building with Tom Robinson liking us and giving us plays on BBC6 Music. Highlights definitely include playing Latitude Festival, being featured in the Sunday Times in Malta and a beautiful gig at an old Church in Bloomsbury where we played a paired down set with just the two of us and our friends said they thought we were going to blow the windows out of the church (in a good way!)!
After a 10 year career break to have our three children, I decided to start Little Beats up again and my work in schools which I absolutely love. I hope to be able to build my groups and offer a group for over 60s sometime soon.
I am constantly either listening to or making music. Whether it’s prepping for a class, listening to my favourite playlist when cooking the family dinner or singing a silly made up song with the kids, about our dog, music is a constant in our house and always has been.
